Why is AI-generated language so hard to understand?

In sum, this work tests two specific hypotheses
about the intelligibility of AI-generated text. H1:
The language output of frontier and near-frontier
LLMs overuses linguistic features associated with
human comprehension difficulty. H2: A pressure
for information density during post-training shifts
the language output of LLMs to be less humanlike.
Using a combination of linguistic analysis and di-
rect post-training intervention, we find support for
both hypotheses. Our findings highlight the dimen-
sions along which human language processing and
frontier LLMs are misaligned, and point to possible
interventions for addressing this misalignment.
