Democracy doesn’t mean treating voters as infallible oracles of what’s true. It means using them as the ultimate foundation of a system of government. They often have false beliefs and make bad decisions, but we put our fate in their hands because we trust them to at least have a certain level of good intentions, or if not good intentions at least a certain level of self-interest, and this has historically been the only sure check on tyranny and misrule.
